Here are a few things I’ve stumbled upon recently that made me stop and think. Some are quotes from books I’ve been reading, while others are little remarks I’ve come across on social media. When I find something that inspires me or challenges my perspective I make a point of writing it down in my journal in a section I call my ‘Inbox’. It's a nice collection to have when I need inspiration for writing.
"Here's my question. If the ghost wants nothing more than to be witnessed, why would it appear behind you, not in front of you? The only answer I can think of is this: it appears behind you because it already knows, to an absolute certainty, that you will have no choice but to look back." Jon Ware, I Am In Eskew
"There is a law in physics known as Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, and it goes something like this: In the realm of small particle science, the small particles themselves are altered by the technology you have to use to find and observe them. It can't be otherwise. If you expand that by a few orders you get this: However it is that you approach the thing you seek, that thing responds to your approach and your way of seeking, so much so that what you end up finding is the sum of the reactions of the sought-after thing to your way of trying to find it. You find your looking, in other words, you will see your eyes. What you will find is a faithful rendering of your own consequences."
"having children just for the sake of reproduction: ideology of a virus."
“And then one student said that happiness is what happens when you go to bed on the hottest night of the summer, a night so hot you can't even wear a tee-shirt and you sleep on top of the sheets instead of under them, although try to sleep is probably more accurate. And then at some point late, late, late at night, say just a bit before dawn, the heat finally breaks and the night turns cool and when you briefly wake up, you notice that you're almost chilly, and in your groggy, half-consciousness, you reach over and pull the sheet around you and just that flimsy sheet makes it warm enough and you drift back off into a deep sleep. And it's that reaching, that gesture, that reflex we have to pull what's warm— whether it's something or someone—toward us, that feeling we get when we do that, that feeling of being safe in the world and ready for sleep, that's happiness.”
"Funny. ballroom dancing was made to be a mockery or the aristocrats and their dances. It's contortionism speaks to it. The women bend over backwards to a man who is perfectly free to see and move and guide the woman wherever he demands her to be."
"A young exoplanet called HIP 67522b orbits its host star so tightly that it's slowly destroying itself. The planet whips around the star in under 10 days, releasing waves of magnetic energy as it goes. When these bursts of energy hit the star, they trigger a flare that fires a huge dose of radiation back at the planet, stripping away some of the planet's atmosphere each time. The findings are the first recorded instance of a planet magnetically influencing the behavior of its star."
"I am in love with the hook upon which everyone hangs"Joanna Newsom
"What do you do when you are in the belly of the whale?"
"I am trying to see things in perspective. My dog wants a bite of my peanut butter chocolate chip bagel. I know she cannot have this, because chocolate makes dogs very sick. My dog does not understand this. She pouts and wraps herself around my leg like a scarf and purrs and tries to convince me to give her just a tiny bit. When I do not give in, she eventually gives up and lays in the corner, under the piano, drooping and sad. I hope the universe has my best interest in mind like I have my dog's. When I want something with my whole being, and the universe withholds it from me, I hope the universe thinks to herself: "Silly girl. She thinks this is what she wants, but she does not understand how it will hurt." -THEORIES ABOUT THE UNIVERSE by Blythe Baird
